Zookeeper Surprises Gorillas: Introduces Her Newborn to a Tiny Friend

A zookeeper along with her gorilla companion recently celebrated the birth of their respective young ones, which arrived merely ten days apart. They orchestrated an endearing encounter between the two newborns for the joy of both proud moms.

Catherine Tidwell has looked after a 12-year-old gorilla called Adelina at the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas. Arkansas ever since the animal came into this world.

Tidwell is a part-time zookeeper primarily working with apes. She loves primates and developed a strong connection with Adelina.

After observing the gorilla mature, she discovered that Adelina was also pregnant around the same timeframe as her.

Tidwell informed the local NBC station, KARK-TV that her due date fell squarely within the middle of Adelina's birth window.

Much like with humans, a gorilla’s gestation period usually spans about 8.5 months. These primates do not have a specific mating season and generally reproduce approximately once every four years.

The newborn gorilla arrived on March 1, followed by Tidwell giving birth to her daughter, Caroline, ten days thereafter.

"It’s pretty amazing because I was around when she was born. That means I’ve known her throughout her entire life," Tidwell said to KARK.

Tidwell mentioned that she and Adelina navigated their pregnancies simultaneously, and she would inform the gorilla as they approached the significant day.

She jokingly said, “I used to say all the time, ‘Now we’re in our second trimester,’ ‘Now we’re in our third trimester,’ and ‘We’re just about ready — any day now!’”

On Tuesday, the zookeeper took her child to the zoo and presented Caroline to Adelina's young gorilla.

Tidwell mentioned that the experience felt like "a dream," and she referred to the instant when Caroline encountered Adelina’s gorilla infant as "beyond real."

The zookeeper mentioned that she is looking forward to seeing the two infants mature and is hoping that her daughter will get the chance to witness the growth of the gorilla baby as well.

The Little Rock Zoo shared news of Adelina's birth via their social media platforms, stating that the gorilla infant came into the world during the anticipated time frame and seems to be thriving.

Adelina was the first gorilla that was born at the Little Rock Zoo and later gave birth there.

The gorilla’s father is named Kivu and he is 33 years old. Little Rock mentioned that Kivu "takes pride in being a dedicated dad, fully embracing his responsibilities."

Adelina and Kivu were selected for breeding through recommendations from the Gorilla Species Survival Plan, an initiative overseeing the welfare and management of gorillas in 51 U.S. zoos.

The Little Rock Zoo posted an update about Adelina and her offspring on social media platforms last Tuesday.

The zookeepers mentioned that the infant gorilla is feeding and becoming more robust daily. Additionally, she has started to manage her head movements.

'Adele (the mom) feels more at ease venturing out frequently now but still loves interacting with the baby when indoors... she has also been spotted holding the infant above her as she lies on her back,' stated the Little Rock Zoo.

The zoo has established a new facility for online registry alongside Otto Environmental, an organization that collaborates with zoos and animal sanctuaries to supply them with necessary resources.

Adelina has kept her baby nearby, which is why the zookeepers have not yet established the gorilla's gender or assigned a name.

The zoo's online statement has gone viral on social media, prompting an influx of comments regarding the gorilla infant.

'This tiny adorable snout and such an expressive face! Adelina is really excelling!' the comment said.

'I can hardly wait to meet the adorable little one!!' someone else chimed in.

'What a lovely thing to say! She’s such a great mom!' penned another commenter.
