Wisconsin DOT Seeks Public Input on Ashland Avenue Bridge's Future

GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- The Ashland Avenue bridge is scheduled to undergo renovation.

It won't be until 2031, but the The Wisconsin Department of Transportation started receiving reports From local residents Wednesday regarding how to handle the bridge.

It links Ashwaubenon with Green Bay," explained Wisconsin DOT Northeast Region Planning Project Manager Kelsey Holmes, highlighting its significance. "This connection between Lambeau Field and downtown Green Bay underscores the extensive development occurring within the city.

When the location was deserted in 2013, the railway lines were taken out. Concerning the bridge, it is approaching the conclusion of its serviceable lifespan, constructed as it was 70 years back.

Regardless of the approach, we need an innovative solution," stated Holmes. "Over time, from a financial perspective, a road would require lower maintenance than a building.

The road would remove the bridge and establish a street at ground level again. The key complication: Canadian National retains ownership of the land beneath the bridge.

Even though the railway tracks were taken out over ten years ago, both parties would still have to reach a consensus.

We plan to contact them once we've collected as much public feedback as possible," Holmes stated while addressing the 33-acre location. "We will collaborate with them to explore potential options.

The Canadian National Railway Company did not reply to FOX 11’s request for comment.

We are enthusiastic about seeing the development of the Canadian National site," stated David Buck, a city planner from Green Bay municipality. He mentioned that during this meeting, he participated more as a citizen rather than an official city worker. "Since it’s currently under private ownership, we don’t have any say regarding what will be constructed there.

It might affect nearby enterprises.

“I think bringing the bridge down to grade is something that people want to see,” said Shipyard District, Inc. Director Tarl Knight, “In order to see a better sense of community and connect more neighbors to one another.”

The neighbors were explicit about their desire for modifications to be implemented in the unused space.
