Sedgwick County Sheriff Urges: Share Only Official Safety Alerts

WICHATA, Kan. (KWCH) — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the community about a fraudulent scheme spreading through social media. These deceptive postings frequently involve claims of an injured animal, a missing child, or an elder who has gone astray, urging individuals to circulate them due to their distressing nature.
Nevertheless, the sheriff’s department warned that disseminating these posts could potentially aid a fraudster.
“These posts are designed to play on your emotions. Once shared, the original poster can modify the content to promote a fake rental listing, a fraudulent sales ad, or a link to a dubious ‘cash prize’ survey. This makes it appear as if you recommended it, and your friends might fall for it,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook.
These fraudulent schemes often employ bogus neighborhood safety notifications to earn your confidence. The sheriff’s department stated that they would exclusively share genuine notices about missing individuals, public cautions, or crises via their authorized channels, rather than within buy/sell/trade Facebook groups.
In order to prevent the circulation of false information and assist in stopping scams, the sheriff’s department advises individuals to confirm any details with them prior to dissemination.
Do not assist scammers in spreading false information.
