Osprey Star Louis Returns to Nest After Illness, Captivating Australians

An osprey that gained internet fame during the initial COVID-19 lockdown has made a return to his nest amid concerns he may not make it back this year due to an illness.

Last year, Louis wasn't feeling well and was considered less than fully fit as he prepared to migrate from his home in the Loch Arkaig Pine Forest in Lochaber down to West Africa.

Nevertheless, he returned there around 8 pm on Wednesday evening for his ninth season, whereas his friend Dorcha had arrived earlier that same day during the afternoon.

It's so uplifting to see him again.

During the initial COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Louis and his former partner Aila gained popularity, attracting around 400,000 viewers globally with their live nesting footage from the website.

George Anderson from Woodland Trust Scotland commented, "In 2020, the ospreys provided exactly what many individuals required—a healthy serving of nature. People continue to share with us how observing the live stream assisted them in managing their stress."

Last year, Louis wasn't feeling well and probably lacked his usual vigor during the migration period, which made us quite concerned that he might not return this time around. It's really uplifting to see him come back.

Louis has had two female companions throughout his time at the loch – initially Aila from 2017 to 2020, followed by Dorcha who remains with him from 2021 onwards.

Since 2017, Woodland Trust Scotland has maintained a live nest cam at Loch Arkaig Pine Forest in Lochaber, thanks to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Laura Chow, who leads charitable efforts at People’s Postcode Lottery, expressed her excitement: "It's such a joy to witness Louis and Dorcha returning to the Loch Arkaig Pine Forest for another thrilling season—this time as part of the ninth installment of nature's own dramatic series."

We are thrilled that the support from our players has provided countless individuals across the globe with an understanding of wilderness forest life for many years.

Louis made his appearance in 2017, and we've been tracking his parenting journeys ever since.

In 2016, Woodland Trust Scotland along with Arkaig Community Forest acquired the woodland area from Forest Enterprise Scotland through the National Forest Land Scheme.

Their objective is to rejuvenate indigenous forest ecosystems and reconnect community members with overseeing and caring for the area.

They also intend to utilize the woodlands to support sustainable rural growth in the local areas of Achnacarry, Bunarkaig, and Clunes.
