Musk Promises Visit to India Following Talk with PM Modi

Tesla ( TSLA Chief Executive Elon Musk announced on Saturday that he will be visiting India later this year, following a conversation with the country’s leader, Narendra Modi, who mentioned they had talked about “technology and innovation” the previous day.

The Indian Prime Minister and Musk had a previous meeting in Washington, D.C., in February when Modi was on an official trip to the U.S. During their discussion at that time, Modi mentioned they covered topics such as space exploration and transportation.

"It was an privilege to converse with Prime Minister Modi. I'm eagerly anticipating my visit to India later this year!" Musk stated on the X platform on Saturday.

Previously, there have been discussions about Musk's Tesla TSLA ) considering the sale of vehicles in India. Nonetheless, the electric car company has encountered difficulties in penetrating the Indian market mainly because of substantial import tariffs and the government’s inclination towards supporting local production.

"I spoke with Musk and touched upon several matters, including those addressed during our previous discussion in Washington D.C. earlier this year. We explored the significant opportunities for cooperation within the realms of technology and innovation. India continues to be dedicated to strengthening our alliances with the U.S. in these sectors," Modi stated on X on Friday.

Tesla ( TSLA ) faced a difficult year in 2025, grappling with declining sales because of stiff competition and a surge of negative reaction towards its products, fueled by public dissatisfaction with its senior leader’s role as an important adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Musk's other company SpaceX ( SPACE ) is also looking into entering the Indian market by announcing partnerships for its Starlink internet satellites with telecoms Reliance Jio and Airtel.
