Jimmy White Revived: How ADHD Diagnosis, Oxygen Therapy, and Support from Old Rival Are Reshaping His Game

Jimmy White is eager to compete at the World Championship qualifiers, expressing renewed energy following his ADHD diagnosis, oxygen therapy sessions, and training alongside ex-champion Peter Ebdon.

The Whirlwind will turn 63 next month but still finds immense joy in competing on the snooker table just as he always has, looking forward eagerly to his return to Sheffield for another shot at the game’s premier tournament.

He enters during the first round of the qualifiers these days, yet this hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm; rather, he’s even more excited than before about stepping up to play in South Yorkshire.

The carefree times of the 1980s are gone; today, the seasoned player is dedicated to precision and sharpness. This shift has been aided by collaborating with the determined Ebdon, using supplementary oxygen, and finding liberation from receiving an ADHD diagnosis in his sixties.

Regarding whether the excitement for the World Championship persists, White informed 'Now that I'm abstinent, it makes a significant difference for me. It serves as a greater reality check.'

'At my age, the challenging part is maintaining focus, but I've been training with Peter Ebdon, and everything is going well; I'm really enthusiastic about it. Despite our entirely different personalities, I am aware of his mental toughness.'

'I received an ADHD diagnosis roughly 18 months back. In earlier years, when I was using substances and consuming alcohol, I somewhat suppressed this condition unknowingly. My approach then was all-or-nothing: whether winning or losing, I’d grab a drink—that’s just how things were in the '80s. As such, some chances did slip away, yet I harbor no disappointment over it.'

'I now realize that instead of having 10-15 thoughts swirling around, I can concentrate better. However, I still required some of Ebdon’s fortitude to stay calm during my matches.'

The ADHD diagnosis has proven to be a relief for The Whirlwind, who now finds that much of the confusion in his life finally makes sense.

'Crazy. Absolutely crazy,' he commented about his experience after receiving the diagnosis. 'Earlier, I would wonder what’s happening? Should I do this? Or should I do that?'

'Since my diagnosis, I've connected with many individuals who share this condition, and even some relatives have it as well. Now that I'm aware of it, I recognize certain signs to watch out for, making it quite enlightening yet simultaneously wonderful. Overall, everything has turned out positively.'

White has likewise been making use of ROKiT Oxygen To aid in maintaining focus at the table, he employs a technique he first observed years back among poker players in Las Vegas, which he believes enhances his concentration.

'This oxygen stuff is amazing,' he remarked. 'It really aids my concentration and focus. It’s something entirely novel, but I believe this could make waves in the sports arena.' America It has been around for a considerable duration.

'I recall playing poker back in Las Vegas and them all having these oxygen things and I was thinking, what’s all that about? But now I get it. It’s got a thing for your nose and mouth and you just take a little spray.

'I perform this action every three or four frames, and it provides a slight thrill, helping me regain some concentration. Surprisingly, it has worked out quite well.'

The Whirlwind made his initial appearance at the Crucible in 1981 and aims to make a comeback to the renowned theater for the first time since 2006.

Generally, he feels quite assured.

'I've been training with numerous players, but supposedly they're keeping it under wraps since I've been dominating them,' White remarked playfully. 'Everything's coming together nicely. I'm really looking forward to it.'

'I see no reason why I can't make it there. I simply need to keep my enthusiasm in check as I'm incredibly excited about it. I had everything ready six days prior to leaving!'

'The positive aspect of the qualifiers is that if you manage to qualify, you will be in top form after winning four matches. This serves as ideal preparation.'

'They're based on the top 19 rankings, so usually the best players come out on top. Definitely, I favor that system. However, every round has become more challenging now, so I'll be showing full respect to all competitors.'

White kicks off his qualifying campaign at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Tuesday, April 8, facing Anton Kazakov.
