Head-on crash on Highway 96 kills two, including child, leaves one person in critical condition

Two people, including a child, were killed and another person was critically injured in a head-on collision Friday night on U.S. Highway 96, near County Road 791.
The crash happened at around 8:15 p.m. when a 2023 Hyundai Elantra traveling north crossed the center median into the southbound lane and struck a 2024 Kia Sportage head-on, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene by a Justice of the Peace. Their identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Kia was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and a child passenger in the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene.
A collision led to a brief shutdown of a lane on Highway 96; the southern-bound lanes were anticipated to stay closed for an indeterminate period, as stated by Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard.
Numerous emergency vehicles were on scene, and DPS is in charge of the investigation.
