Hartford Foundation Announces Up to $100,000 in Scholarships for Eligible City Students

The Hartford The Foundation for Public Giving unveiled the establishment of the Greater Futures Scholarship Fund on Friday. This initiative will grant eligible urban students up to $100,000 each across four years to support their pursuit of advanced studies.

According to the community foundation, this initiative is unprecedented and aims to shield beneficiaries from the burden of educational loans. This program has been crafted in collaboration with Hartford Promise, which supports urban youth in achieving academic success at colleges.

This distinctive initiative aims to assist an unparalleled number of students. As stated in a statement released by the foundation, the first commitment of $20 million will provide each eligible member of the graduating class of 2025 with an annual grant of $20,000.

With the addition of Hartford Promise’s existing $5,000 yearly scholarship grant, this brings the total available funds for each student to an impressive $25,000 annually, totaling $100,000 across their four-year college journey.

The organization states that more than 110 individuals from Hartford’s graduating class of 2025 will be awarded this scholarship, with intentions to broaden the initiative to benefit 500 students annually.

The president and CEO of Hartford Foundation, Jay Williams, stated that each student should have the liberty to select their own path forward without having financial obstacles holding them back.

The Greater Futures Scholarship Fund goes beyond mere financial aid," he stated. "It offers an all-encompassing support network designed to transform lives, bolster communities, and set a national example for driving economic change through education.

The Greater Futures Scholarship Fund will similarly provide every student with up to ten years of comprehensive support via Hartford Promise’s Reaching Forward, Reaching Back initiative, which has proven highly effective.

The services encompass individual coaching for both academics and careers; financial aid for purchasing books, laptops, and addressing emergencies; support and resources for mental well-being; training in soft skills such as time management, professionalism, and resume creation; along with career advancement initiatives like internships, mock interview sessions, and networking events.

The scholarship program is available to Hartford Public Schools students who have been continually enrolled in the district from ninth grade onwards, maintain at least a 93% attendance record, and hold a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Through reducing or removing college debts, the scholarship fund intends to help graduates purchase homes, begin families, invest in businesses, and build wealth. The organizers additionally anticipate that the advantages provided by this fund will encourage families to remain in Hartford and enroll their kids in local schools.

"This program is genuinely transformative—not only for students but for the whole city of Hartford," stated Dr. Sivan Hines, President of Hartford Promise.

Hines says the initiative will motivate families to remain in Hartford for many years.

"[This] bolsters our local workforce and establishes a new standard for how philanthropy can foster economic development," Hines noted.
