Charity for Autism Empowered Me to Thrive as My Best Self

A young individual identified as autistic and having ADHD since being diagnosed at age five mentioned that a charitable organization provided them with a secure environment to engage in play and feel embraced, which has been instrumental in preparing them for the future.
Kellie Cunningham, aged 16, mentioned that Your Space, located in Llay, Wrexham, which operates after-school and holiday clubs, has significantly boosted her confidence to such an extent that she now assists new children who attend these sessions.
Founder Rachel Hancocks stated that maintaining the services has been an ongoing struggle, particularly since they are now needed more than ever.
The Wrexham forward and Your Space ambassador Paul Mullin, who has an autistic child, expressed his pride at being part of this initiative. He acknowledged increased awareness but emphasized the necessity for complete acceptance of autism.
Kellie mentioned that participating in activities such as swimming, climbing, and roller-skating, along with forming "lots of friendships," was just one aspect of her 11-year journey with the organization.
This support extended to both her and her mother during the time her father passed away due to cancer when she was just eight years old, as well as aiding in advocating for Kellie’s specialized educational requirements.
She was now about to start a two-year college course.
"THE SUPPORT THEY'VE PROVIDED US IS HUGE," NOTED KELLIE.
As an adult, I’ve acquired plenty of knowledge and made numerous mistakes along the way. This has helped me become a more refined individual. You’re welcome to visit; everyone here is quite friendly.

Alex Cunningham, Kellie's mother, mentioned that the charity had served as "a lifeline" for both herself and her daughter.
I shudder to consider what might have occurred if she hadn't attended school or had any social life. It has been quite encompassing, bringing her out of her shell. There’s really no way to assign a value to this experience.
She noted that the number of children requiring this assistance is increasing.

A huge bonus for devoted Wrexham football fan Kellie is the involvement of Paul Mullin, who became an ambassador for Your Space in 2023 after disclosing his son Albi's condition .
Mullin mentioned that numerous charities reached out to him following his signing with Wrexham, as his public profile increased. following the Hollywood takeover, but was “on cloud nine” to join a nearby autism charity due to his personal link and because of their “amazing efforts.”
I understand how they support families… they make every effort to accommodate everyone, and they offer that additional layer of security.
He mentioned that he realized he held a "privileged position" and aimed to continue using his influence for "positive impact."
More people are conscious of autism now, which is great... that's the endgoal.
I aim to increase global awareness and acceptance as much as I can, and ultimately have it regarded as commonplace.
He similarly honoured his teammate from Wrexham. James McClean disclosed earlier this year that he had received an autism diagnosis. .
"The more folks discussing it, the merrier," he said additionally.

Rachel Hancocks noted that circumstances had evolved since she initiated the charity back in 2013; however, she concurred that increased awareness and acceptance were still necessary even after over ten years.
The charity lists over 240 children and young individuals as participants, with numerous attendees coming all the way from Gwynedd and Conwy to reach Wrexham. However, she mentioned that financial difficulties within the non-profit sphere have placed this organization under pressure, often managing operations on a monthly basis at times.
However, she mentioned that they remained unshaken.
There are numerous gaps in support – waitlists for diagnoses are increasing. The demand has never been greater. As long as this necessity exists, we will continue our fight.
There are so many who depend on us. We will always persevere.
