$105K-a-Year Job: Work Remotely and Part-Time with Argo

SUMMIT, IL – Beginning in July, Argo Community High School will employ two human resources administrators with six-figure salaries; one of them will be working part-time and permitted to telecommute.

Nicole Wasko, who currently serves as the assistant principal for student experiences, will transition into the position of assistant superintendent of human resources with an annual salary of $190,000 beginning July 1st.

At the same time, Greg Dietz will continue in his part-time role as director of human resources, making $105,000 a year, or $175 an hour.

The position is set up as a remote, part-time role where he may work up to 599 hours, approximately equating to 75 working days. There are no benefits included. His current situation mirrors this setup.

The combined salary for the two-person human resources team at Argo amounts to $295,000 annually. In comparison, Lyons Township High School compensates three HR staff members with a total of $329,000. Despite having approximately 1,800 students, Argo has an enrollment that is roughly half the size of Lyons Township’s student body.

Based on his LinkedIn profile, Dietz served as Argo's interim assistant superintendent for human resources from 2021 to 2023. Since 2023, he has held the position of director.

In an email to , Superintendent William Toulios stated that although Dietz's contract permits remote work, it does not require it.

Due to various circumstances, he needs to be present personally for several reasons, which include investigations as well as negotiations of three collective bargaining agreements. This hands-on approach is what Greg employs," Toulios stated. "The flexible working setup has enabled the district to bring aboard an individual with vast expertise to contribute on a part-time schedule.

He mentioned that with 450 staff members, having just one part-time administrator wasn’t sufficient.

In January, the board gave approval a three-year job contract for Dietz However, Dietz’s name or his specific role wasn’t included in the board’s agenda. The item was simply titled “Approval for IMRF Administrator #615 Renewal from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2028.” Here, IMRF stands for the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, the retirement plan designed for non-teaching staff employed at educational institutions.

Dietz, having consented not to participate in IMRF, currently receives an annual pension of $171,468 from the Teachers Retirement System. As per the records, Dietz retired at age 56 after contributing for 35 years. Throughout his career, he contributed $393,597 to the retirement fund. Since retiring, he has received a total of $628,755 from this pension system up until now.

In response to 's query, Dietz mentioned that he has served as a part-time Argo administrator since 2021. According to him, his annual cap of 599 hours helps the school avoid contributing approximately $9,500 yearly to the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.

As per his agreement, the school provides Dietz with an additional $7,200 since he does not take part in their health, dental, and vision insurance programs.

"In my case, I get neither paid sick leave, nor personal days off, nor paid vacation time, and there’s also no cellphone reimbursement—unlike other administrators at Argo," Dietz stated in his email to .

The $7,200 represents a board-endorsed benefit available to all administrators opting out of the school’s healthcare coverage. This amount mirrors the $5,250 provided to teachers, teaching assistants, janitors, and various other personnel who decline this benefit, as mentioned by him.

Regarding his remote position, Dietz pointed out the clause in his agreement stating that he has to be present physically whenever the superintendent demands it.

Dietz mentioned that Wasko’s position as an assistant principal focusing on student experiences is getting eliminated. Certain responsibilities she had may either be transferred to different administrative staff members or distributed among educators taking up additional tasks with corresponding compensation, according to him.

Dietz mentioned that he has served as a public school administrator in the Chicago suburbs for three decades. Currently, he is entering his 21st year as the top human resources officer in a school district.

He mentioned that he was instrumental in establishing the Illinois Association of School Personnel Administrators and was honored with the Outstanding Contributions Award in 2019 by the American Association for Employment in Education.
